Registered veterinary technicians are credentialed clinical professionals who provide nursing care, assist in surgery and anaesthesia, run diagnostics and lab work, and administer treatments under a veterinarian. Becoming one is a college-diploma-plus-registration path, a regulated clinical profession with a provincial regulatory body. Here is how to get there.
Understand the classification
Job Bank classifies this occupation under NOC 32104, Animal health technologists and veterinary technicians, a health-technician occupation grouped with other health technicians such as licensed practical nurses and opticians. It is a clinical role, entered through education and registration.
Complete an accredited diploma
- Enrol in a two- or three-year accredited animal health or veterinary technology college diploma program
- Learn clinical nursing, anaesthesia and surgical assisting, diagnostic imaging, laboratory technique, pharmacology, and client education
- Complete the supervised clinical and practicum hours the program requires
Pass the registration exam and register
- Write and pass the national registration examination (the VTNE)
- Register with your provincial animal health technologist or veterinary technician association. Registration is available in all provinces and is mandatory in some
- On registration you hold the protected professional credential: RVT, or the provincial equivalent such as AHT
This is a registered clinical profession with a provincial regulatory body. It is not an apprenticeship, and it is not a trade certification. The RVT designation is what distinguishes a qualified technician.
Keep your registration current
- Maintain the continuing-education and good-standing requirements your provincial association sets
- Many clinics support first aid, CPR for animals, and further clinical training
Land your first role
Apply to veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, and emergency and specialty hospitals, and be clear about your diploma and RVT registration. Set up a job alert on a board built for the credentialed role so new openings reach you before they fill, because clinics face a documented shortage and hire quickly when a qualified RVT applies.
